Lorenzo Washington
2021 Science Envoy
Lorenzo Washington is a PhD student in Plant & Microbial Biology at UC Berkeley, receiving his BS in Bioenvironmental Sciences from Texas A&M in 2018. He studies how the plant cell wall & plasma membrane influence the establishment & regulation of beneficial microbial relationships in the root system. Progress in this research area will help illuminate the complex world of mutualistic plant-microbial relationships that can introduce new sustainable solutions to modern agriculture. Always having a passion for the sciences, but rarely seeing a face like his doing any of it, inspires Lorenzo’s commitment to outreach. He hopes his efforts can help bridge the divide that has formed between the sciences & the public as well as engender his same passion in other people from underrepresented backgrounds.
