Haven't accumulated the book yet, but the concept of constraints as determinants of what is Allowed to Happen sounds like riverbanks guiding water. Corresponds nicely to the sculpture model of learning, removing what isn't used; or usable (where constraints come in.)

Incomplete Nature by Terrence W. Deacon

Several of us here in Sonoma County are studying & discussing together Deacon's Incomplete Nature, How [Life &] Mind Emerged from [the Constraints on] Matter. Deacon's book is an intriguing and challenging study that introduces the complex system dynamics of our natural world – thermodynamically and physically based, yet generative of far-from-equilibrium dynamic processes that are stabilized, resilient and robust. These reciprocally constraining, iterative processes, with negative & stabilizing feedback balanced by positive & amplifying feed-forward, are seen as the basis for the emergent evolution of the world of life and of the world of mind out of a physical world.
His arguments are clear, but I haven't yet made the leap of adequately understanding the role of “the absential” in shaping constraints, but tough as it is, it's a rewarding read.
